Prostate Not Prostrate: When Silence Is the Real Thief
Nottingham, UK – 25th October 2025 – Mon0lisa Productions presents Prostate Not Prostrate: When Silence Is the Real Thief, hosted by Mon0lisa Productions, funded by Orchid, and supported by local Community Champions, at Nottingham Contemporary on Monday, 1st December 2025 at 6:30 PM. Doors open at 5.30pm. Nottingham Contemporary is supporting the play through their Communities Programme, helping to engage local audiences and widen participation.
“Too many Black men are dying from prostate cancer in silence. Through Patty Dumplin, this play acts like a key — unlocking conversations without shame, helping men feel confident to speak with their GP and take action.” – Lisa Jackson, Writer & Producer
The play, written by Lisa Jackson and directed by Jim Findley, mixes humour and truth to spark life-saving conversations about men’s health. Inspired by the experiences of the Nottingham Community Champions, it follows Patty Dumplin, a sharp-tongued grandmother encouraging her husband to see a doctor, exposing the humour, fear, and silence surrounding prostate cancer. Guest appearances by local Champion Osbourne Taylor bring real-life insight to the performance.
The evening also features information stalls where audiences can learn about: - Friends and Bredrins — Prostate Cancer Support Group - The Rose Thompson Foundation - Nottinghamshire Sexual Violence Support Services - Orchid Nottingham Community Champions — learning more about Orchid and its work around male cancers, including prostate, testicular, and penile cancers
Prostate cancer disproportionately affects Black men, one in four Black African and Black Caribbean men will get prostate cancer, compared to one in eight men of other ethnicities according to Orchid. By combining comedy with education, the play delivers this vital message in an accessible and memorable way.
A post-show discussion with Ali Orhan from Orchid and Nottingham Community Champions will give audiences the chance to ask questions, learn more, and act.
Tickets: Pay-what-you-can, starting from £1, with donations supporting local Orchid Champions to continue their outreach work. Tickets are available via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/prostate-not-prostrate-play-tickets-1777639470509
